Last night I was in Cherry Springs trying to see supernova 2012am in M65. Could not see the supernova but made this new sketch of the galaxy. 16", 21.75 mpsas by SQM-L. The sketch captures the appearance at 225x. Needless to say, the contrast is exaggerated. This galaxy is rather subtle in 16". North up, west right, approximately.

SN2013am was fairly easily visible as a 16 mag star inside the southern spiral arm @ 326x. M65 has a beatiful spiral structure but it took some time to realize how it goes. There are larger brighter areas on the both heads whereas central area is more complicated. ~15 mag stars on the east and west side of the core.

Excellent observation, Iiro! Yes, I figured if I couldn't see that mag 15 star west of the core, the SN also would be invisible.
