As requested by Jimi, I'll add some sketches here. The first is a nice bright bit of eye candy, our northern showpiece globular M13. The night I sketched this, using my 18", the conditions were too poor for 'serious' deep sky observing and, wanting to do something, I decided to look at M13 and sketch it. I used pencil on white paper then inverted it in Photoshop.

Very nice - I wish I had the skill set to sketch like this.

Everyone here seems to be a big scope fan, but M13 is worth sketching even with a small one.

Great sketch Sue!

Though it may appear that we're big scope fans, (and we are) I think we're all here cuz we're deep sky fans! :D

Yes, it's great in all sizes of scope. I also did a sketch of M13 using my old 8.75" Newtonian back in the 1990s. I am definitely a big scope fan but, as Dragan says, a deep sky fan. I enjoy using my 8" Newtonian as much as my 18".

One of my favorite M13 "chores" is to ferret out that little stinker galaxy in the edge of the cluster, IC4617. It's approximately half way from the center of M13 to NGC6207.
Another mission is to find the right magnification to display well the red giants in the cluster. Some nights I see them well (they are yellower to my eye than the other stars in the cluster) and other nights I don't. Perhaps it's due to differences in sky transparency or seeing conditions.

M13 is one of my favorites and I will look out for those red giants next time out.
