I have always been interested in jets in galaxies and IC 1182 is one of the best that I know about. Halton Arp took one of the fist deep images of the peculiar galaxy in 1972 and at that time it was thought to be a AGN Seyfert type 2 galaxy but the latest research now suggest that it is some kind of a merger event. What ever is the cause this is a very unusual and rare galaxy with a visual jet.

I have viewed IC 1182 many times over the years and often wondered if others have tracked down its jet? IC 1182 is in down town Hercules cluster (AGC 2151) and I suggest that you have a good finder chart if you seek out IC 1182. The area is littered with faint fuzzies. Also nearby are 4 ARP galaxies you can track down ARP 71,ARP 122, ARP 172 and ARP 272. This is a great area to see several peculiar and interesting galaxies.

When making notes following my observations of Abell 2151 in 2011 I wrote: "IC 1182 is at 450 Mly and appears to have a blue jet; [on the hand-drawn chart schematic made at the eyepiece] I have an illegible marking in the position of the jet but most likely it says that I saw the star at that location." 16", blue zone site, mostly 225x but occasionally much higher.

It turns out I saw all four Arps Jimi mentions. Here are some of the notes from the 2011 observations:

Arp 122: "NGC 6040 with MCG+3-41-73 forms VV 212 and Arp 122. The main galaxy is at 540 and the companion at 537 Mly. The single strongly elongated outline on my chart that was visible was defined by the two galaxies’ cores."

Arp 172: "... Between this area and the W end of the central group in the cluster I observed perhaps the most interesting among these objects, the pair IC 1178, 1181. On the chart I marked its visible outline as slightly elongated NS and lying between the centers of the two touching galaxy symbols. The photographs show it to be a dramatic interacting pair with two bright centers and two widely swept arms that together form an “S”. This system is VV 194 and Arp 172. By redshift it lies on the near side or in front of the cluster, at 444 Mly."

Arp 272: "... On the W edge of this subgroup I outlined a very large nebulous spot. The subpart outlined in the N within this spot is formed by the M51-like double system NGC 6050 that has a third component which is IC 1179 on Wikisky. The overall spot extends S to include PGC 1540468. NED seems to consider NGC 6050 and IC 1179 as synonymic but uses the designations “A” and “B” with either catalog number. The overall system (not including the PGC and not counting the knot or companion on the N side as a distinct component) is VV 220 and has redshift distance 422 Mly. It is also Arp 272, from the category "double galaxies, connecting arms"."

It is a great area to revisit.

Got the knot Jimi.

Very tough with 27", but clearly visible. The knot could be hold for several seconds with averted vision in Frank's 36".
