I finally got hold of an Argo Navis, while I was in Australia earlier this month. Hopefully it won't be too much of a chore installing the encoders although I need to get some extra bits for the...
I can't make it this year. I was but an observing trip to Australia took all my spare funds.
13thm March 2010: Eastern side is the brighter and is crescent shaped, in fact almost triangular. There is also some nebulosity on the western side. 20" Obsession (Magnification unknown) + OIII
B33 and IC 434 in Orion: At last! I have made numerous attempts to see the Horsehead, with no success. However, at the 2010 Isle of Wight Star Party, we (myself and Owen Brazell) saw it comparatively...
It's too low for me at 50°N sadly, but I've observed it when I have been far enough south to see it.
From Australia in April 2014: Easily visible through my 8x42 binoculars as a roundish fuzzy...
The cell is fine, it's just the 'bottom' edge of the box that has the tight clearance at 45° and it will - I hope! - be relatively simple to remove a piece of it to accommodate an encoder below (the...
Thanks. Yes, I am giving it a lot of thought, not least about the clearance between the lowest point of the mirror box and the azimuth bolt where the az encoder will go. I think I am going to have to...
I remember reading about the rum incident on your blog. I had a similar incident - sort of similar in that it involved copious amounts of liquid - when my bag, in company with all the rest from the...
I am thinking of taking the Night Sky Observers Guide Vol 3 with me, even though it is quite a large and heavy book. That said, I carried it from Texas back to the UK in 2010 (I bought it at TSP).
Thanks for all the comments so far.
I was looking at Nexus but, as I've already been talking to Gary at Wildcard Innovations (the maker of Argo Navis) it would feel a bit wrong to change my mind...
Does anyone here use digital setting circles? I've been considering a set of Argo Navis DSCs or similar for a while and putting off actually getting some but, after a frustrating session last night...
Hi Steve, no I've not seen it but I've heard of it. I have just looked it up on Amazon (UK) and it's currently unavailable. However, I do have Jenni Kay's softback guide to the Magellanic Clouds,...
Thanks Steve, these are now on my list for my trip to Australia in March/April. :)
Hi Darren, from the other end of England! It's not for me in my current situation but Watec and similar cams are the way to go for people in light polluted areas, and also I think they'd be good for...
Ok, thanks Jim and Alvin. So, it looks like a Nagler 16 or 17 (would prefer 16 as it's quite a bit cheaper, for some reason) and maybe a 4.5 or 3.5 Delos.
Another thought - I could replace the 5mm and 3mm with the 3-6mm Nagler zoom. What are people's thoughts on this eyepiece?
Thanks Jim. I'll take a look at these.
As for the glasses, I shove them on top of my head out of the way on the times I do take them off (when using eyepieces that have bad eye relief) but, having...
I downloaded and saved Steve's Southern notes which are on the OzSky website. They're good for drawing up observing lists - and I have got some lists already for next year! I think I'll probably run...
I am hoping to do a lot of observing in the LMC, no matter how high or low it is when I go next year. I didn't when I went on my big observing trip in 97 (except NGC 2070, the Tarantula Nebula) and I...
I did the AL Globular program and I agree it was an excellent way of getting to know globular clusters. The concentration class for each one was a headache, some I got spot on, others pretty close...
My eyepiece collection is a bit of a mixed bag of Panoptics (35mm and 22mm), a Plossl (15mm), Naglers (12mm and 9mm - Jimi might remember the 9mm, he sold it to me!) and Radians (5mm and 3mm) and I...
I remembered, earlier today, that my car's annual inspection is due next month :( , so I'll see how that goes before looking into air fares to the US. I don't want to be in the (not unique!) position...
Now THAT is very tempting! I would love to if I can. :)
I'm thinking of going to the South-west US in the Fall (October or even November New Moon time) for an observing trip, either to Texas, New Mexico or Arizona. Trouble is, I haven't decided where to...
