Using 73x and an OIII filter, Abell 33 was immediately visible with direct vision as a very large, well-defined 4' disc attached to a mag 7.2 star...

I haven't looked for Abell 33 with a smallish refractor, but here a couple of observations with 5" and 4" refractors that I've copied below.
