    Brightest single star in M 31 - a catch with 12"

    Hi folks,

recently i spent some hours on M 31. One thing i tried was V 19 - the brightest star in M 31. These days of magnitude 16m2...

    http://www.astronomerstelegram.org/?read=10752

At powers around 300x reference stars and region was not resolved good enough yet. At 425x all important neighbour-stars become visible and background dark enough.
Already after a few seconds the star easily occured in averted vision! It was no permanent view in averted vision, but appeared easily again and again.

It was definately no threshold object for 12" at this time.

Look at this link and table in the second half:

    http://www.baader-planetarium.de/pro...enzgroesse.htm

Star Nr. 16 in the table was visible (phot. Mag. 17.03).

NELM something between 6m5-6m8, humidity 50%, 6600ft high. Seeing very good, no wind.

    Anyone else tried this?
    Maybe even someone with 10"?

Great catch. No, I haven't looked at this one. m16.2 may be only slightly brighter than Odewahn's star 12 in NGC 206 but a cleaner target not on a background of a compact cluster.

    Hi Ivan, thank u!

Odewahn´s star 12 ... okay... according to the paper this one is even slightly brighter than V 19...
More to this, star number 11 in odewahn´s paper even has 14m77?? If this is right i wonder why they talk about number 12 and not about 11 when searching for single stars in M 31...?

    Did u observe Nr. 12 succesfully? With 16" ?

Yes, I did. All stars in the field of NGC 206 were numbered - the M31 stars and the Milky Way foreground stars.

This is the first I've heard of an amateur being able to resolve an individual star in another galaxy. On two different nights, with absolutely spectacular conditions, I had Andromeda appear somewhat granular and I felt that I was on the threshold of resolving individual stars. I definitely have to look into this...

The only star I’ve gone for in M31 was the Luminus Blue Variable AE Andromedae. Can’t even remember how long ago it was but probably 10yrs at least. Won’t claim that I could see it for sure with my 12.5” but made a definite observation with a friend’s 20” Tectron. F7EF5619-1BC6-4A02-948E-684352DF8C71.jpeg

It was a pretty simple star hop from M110 to find that little asterism right beside the star.

I observed Odewahn's #12 October 17, 2017 from SE Oklahoma via 16" f4.49 @ 262 and 350x. It was a threshold observation that night but held steadily in averted vision.

    Hi folks,

recently checked out Odwahn´s #12 with my 12": at 290x under mediocre seeing but good transparency relatively easy catch by indirect vision. Several further dots have been visible in NGC 206. When seeing is perfect i´ll make a sketch of the cloud.
