    NGC 5371

    Hi everyone!
NGC 5371 is a face-on spiral galaxy in the constellation CVn. With an apparent brightness of 10.6 mag and a surface brightness of 13.4 mag, this object might be interesting for beginners as well. The galaxy is placed only a few arc minutes eastern of Hickson 68, therefore there are two reasons to visit this area. Here is my sketch from last spring - I observed with my 24" dobsonian at 252x

    Excellent sketch!

My last observation with a 24-inch mirrors your main features --

24" (7/1/16): very bright and large, elongated 4:3 N-S, contains a relatively small brighter core that is slightly elongated E-W (central bar). The large outer halo shows spiral structure. An arm attached on the north side sweeps west and south and a more ill-defined arm on the east side extends to the north. A mag 9 star is 2.6' NE.

Last March I also made a sketch of Hickson 68 and NGC 5371 using my little 4" Newtonian. The final drawing is not yet ready. I saw basically only 3 detailless galaxies in Hickson 68. But NGC 5371 turned out to be more interesting. The inner brighter part was elongated with 2 faint spots at each end of this brighter structure (towards the bright star from the nucleus and in the opposite direction). I was very happy because I didn't have any prior knowledge of the galaxy's shape.

I'll have to take a look at it in a bigger scope as well. Your drawing is beautiful.

@ Steve: Your report is very close to my sketch!

@ Peter: If I remember correctly, I haven't seen a photograph of NGC 5371 before either. During observation I was suprised how many details became visible within the first minutes.
