Patchick 27 planetary nebula candidate

Hi folks,

Two weeks ago I tried to observe planetary nebula candidate Patchick 27 after hearing about a positive observation by Reiner, who also contributes observation reports to deepskyforum.
Patchick 27 is located near Pickering's Triangular Wisp, as can be seen on this photo (circular smudge in the upper part of the photo):

It is located at RA = 20h48m58.2s DE = +32°18'16" (J2000.0).


I was using my 12" Dobsonian with my O-III filter and various magnifications (49x, 84x, 168x) under NELM 6.7 mag skies, but I could not see Patchick 27.
Probably 12" is not enough aperture, but anyway I decided to give it a go.

Did anyone else observe it successfully? I'm interested in the minimum aperture required to do so.

Please find attached a sketch of what I saw. This includes filament F of the Veil Nebula (as it is called in this report by Steve Gottlieb:

and another filament at 20h49m37“ +32°16‘. (Does that one have a name?)

I marked filament F with an "F", the "no-name (?)" filament with an "X" and the position of Patchick 27 with an arrow.

Hi Robin,

no wonder that you were not able to see Pa 27 with 12-inch.

I tried this planetary last new moon under nearly perfect conditions with my 27-inch and found the planetary very tough.
From the difficulty or better relative brightness of Pa 27 I noted the connection part of the main streaks and the southeast part of the fainter southeast streak as similar. The bridge from the upper streak to the planetary and the isolated plob west of the upper streak were a little bit fainter to see.

Hi, Saw this object last night 11/3/2018 through my friend Jim P. 28 Inch Dob with an OIII filter ,it’s central star was easily seen, The object itself a little tougher. Thanks for posting this , I hadn’t known about it if not for your post ,Raul

I got a look at Patchick 27 this past Saturday night under really poor conditions - high clouds, light fog, 20.70 SQM - but I was still able to see it fairly well with my 28-inch and OIII filter at 155x. I was surprised it stood out as well as it did, and think under better skies it would be a really cool sight.
