    The Homunkulus

    Hello Folks,

here is my sketch from the Homunkulus Nebula. I have Sketch it with color pencils .For me it was really difficult to find the right one.

I have observe this fantastic Object during my Chile Observations. During very good Seeing and with 265x i have a strong impression of orange-brown color. At the same time i saw many details like the intersting shape or the holes, also a jet to northeast next to eta carinae.

    Sketch 12,5" Rio Hurtado (Chile)

    Kind Regards
    Mathias

That is a very realistic sketch. I haven’t seen this nebula with the 12.5” ball dob in Rio Hurtado but I did with my 12” dob from my backyard in La Serena under much more light pollution. Thanks for sharing!

    Hi Mathias,
I have always wanted to see this object. A very realistic rendition. Thanks for sharing your view. I want to see it more than ever now after seeing your sketch! Raul

    Hi Mathias,
It's a beautiful and accurate drawing. I had the opportunity to draw the Homunculus with the 24" at Hakos, Namibia in 2016. I could see more detail (at 400x, 6mm Ethos): the uppermost and the lower hole on your drawing split into 2 parts, a thin bright rim at the top, faint parts extending the upper lobe to a circle, the fainter and more curved jet to the left, etc. But I found the main features to be exactly like on your drawing. I have not processed my drawing yet so I can't show it in its full glory now.
I can also confirm the vivid orange color apparent especially with smaller magnifications.

Also it is very dependent on seeing. I had luck in 2016: it was far from perfect but it was usable. The seeing changed from very good to quite bad on a 10 sec timescale. Windows of good seeing were coming like the waves of the sea but with smaller frequency.
