    Mystery Objects

Recently a couple of us were going through the little private library of the Victoria RASC and came across a box of antique lantern slides and the lantern to project them. They were made by Carpenter & Westley of London. Very cool stuff. In them are a couple of slides with sketches of a few DSO. A couple seem obvious but some aren't. On the first slide I'm sure of M51, M 97, and I thnk possible the other ring might be the "Ring" M57 or I'm thinking possibly NGC 2392. We are wondering what the two edge on galaxies might be. http://rascvic.zenfolio.com/cw-slide...7656#h47d27656

Then there's this slide. http://rascvic.zenfolio.com/cw-slide...7656#h47d2784c What they might be is a total mystery. The arrow with the ball in it might be a comet but in another slide comets are shown quite differently but then again they are sketches. http://rascvic.zenfolio.com/cw-slide...6312#h47d26312 . The whole batch of slides are here. http://rascvic.zenfolio.com/cw-slides

    So, any guesses?

I believe that the circle with the arc and the ball inside on the second slide is M51 also. I have an old Dutch translation of Flammarion's "Les Etoiles et les Curiosités du Ciel", and that drawing is in Flammarion too. Will try to make some scans of the drawings I can find later today.

Edit: on the first slide the image at the top is M27. Flammarion says it is after a drawing made by Lord Rosse as seen through his giant telescope.

Thanks alot. That really helps. I'll pass this info along to my friend who scanned the images. I've found an online copy of the book in French which I'll pass along to him. He's French Canadian so won't have any problem with it.

In case anyone is interested here is the book. You can flip through the whole thing. It's very cool. http://archive.org/stream/lestoilese...ge/n9/mode/2up

In the online copy M51 is at page 122, and M27 is at page 209.

Yes I found those and pointed them out to my friend. I also found an M57 sketch that matches also. My friend says we have a few of old French texts in our library and a couple are by Flammarion so more than likely we have it.
