Boring Horse Head - Barnard 33

    Hello Forum,

B 33 is an often visited object. Large aperture + Hß let the object been visible easily - the next target is often adjust within minutes. But particularly with large aperture >15" it could be a detailed and spectacular dark nebula. Three month ago I took a lot of time with the horse head in combination with my 27" + Hß. The sky conditions were very good, the magnification lies between 113x-172x (AP 6,1mm-4,0mm).

The result impressed my, a lot of detail could been seen, that I doesn't know before. Especially a faint glow within the neck of the head impressed me.

I would be interested in more sketches or observing reports.

    Uwe,

Exceptional! I've observed B33 in scopes from 105mm to light buckets, but I don't remember seeing quite that much detail through anything. Your sketches are always a joy to behold.

Wow, fabulous sketch Uwe! I have seen B33 through a 20" with a Hß filter, but not this level of detail. It was surprisingly obvious against faint IC434 and larger than I expected it to be.

    Thanks for the nicely reply.
I started my try on B 33 after some German observers had try the same object (Rainer Mannoff with 18" and Kai Kretschmar with 28".
It is very interesting what can be seen with different aperture.

Faith, I think most of us thought the "horse" to be much smaller than it is in any telescope - a funny thing.

    Great sketch Uwe!!

But its funny you mention this. I don't know what it is about this object nearly everyone seems to think its alot smaller than it really is! I know I did until I saw it for the first time.

It is a much larger object than one may first suspect.

I suspect all of us unconsciously formed preconceptions as to the size of the Horse Head due to having seen about a bazillion wide angle photos of it prior to viewing it in an eyepiece.

    Hi Uwe,
you know, that I'm a fan of your sketches. I think B33 could be the first light object for my 24"-newton

    greets from münster,
