    Tarantula Nebula

    Dear All,

I thought I would share my drawing of the Tarantula Nebula. This was my main goal on our southern trip.
16", 180x (10mm Delos), mainly unfiltered + some [OIII] details. 2016 May, Hakos, Namibia.

Peter, that is a wonderful drawing! With so much detail I imagine that you put in several hours of scope time over several nights getting everything placed correctly and shaded properly. Your longer description on your web page answered all my questions and make your drawing even more impressive. The levels of shading and detail are really impressive, and realistic, and I'm glad you choose a nice, large image scale for your drawing.

Great detail there, and for the first time I see an actual arachnid, with chelicerae and legs. I studied this object with my travel 150-mm on both trips down south, though nothing comparable to your drawing. But here is a photo of a little tarantula in our cabin on one of those Australian nights.

    Thank you.

Howard, it took the first couple of hours of four nights to make the sketch by the telescope (until the LMC set). I enjoyed it very much. For me it's unusual to see so many details in an object.

Ivan, that spider looks scary! Actually I don't really see a spider in the nebula. It rather resembles the flower of a rose in full bloom to me. But I've never been good at such associations.

    Hello,
Here is my drawing of NGC 2070, sketched at Tivoli farm, not far away from HalosNGC 2070 T508 BL 2012 06 17.jpg

A stunning drawing Bertrand! And I'm impressed at your drawing method too, so that you could concentrate on drawing details at the eyepiece rather than worry about composition and perspective, most excellent.

I've bookmarked your page and will explore it in moire detail later.

    Those are beautiful drawings Bertrand!
If I identified it correctly you saw the red giant close to the center as well (to the left of R136 on your drawing, below the bright tangled threads of the nebula). And you saw many more stars in the clusters R136 and Hodge 301 with the bigger telescope. It could have been a great sight.
