    The "MCG chain"

    Hi everyone,

The book on Galaxies by Steinicke/Jakiel (Springer) mentions a chain of MCG galaxies in CVn, quite close to M 51. I could not easily find observing reports / mentions of this object on the internet, so I'm wondering if any of you have seen this object. The book cites an observation by Frank Richardsen where all 5 galaxies were spotted in a 20", UGC 8364 being the most difficult.

    Data:
    Coordinates from Steinicke/Jakiel: RA 13:18.5, Dec +47:12
    Galaxy designations (from SIMBAD):
    MCG+08-24-102 (b)
    MCG+08-24-103 (a)
    MCG+08-24-105 (c)
    MCG+08-24-104 (d)
    UGC 8364 (e)
There is additionally a galaxy without designation at 13:18:50 +47:09:48 in the field (f).

Here's my observation from last night:

The numbers indicate difficulty (1 being easiest) and the letters denote the matching against designations listed above.

Hard to tell difficulty between (c) and (d), as they were quite close -- it could have been the other way. Galaxies marked with 'x' were not seen. (e) was only very vaguely sensed with a few distinct flashes, and I would consider it as a threshold observation.

    Best magnifications for viewing with 18"/Bortle 2 skies were 200x ~ 290x.

    Clear Skies

    Regards
    Akarsh

I'll have to see if any of these are visible in a 12.5".
